AURORA, COLORADO — An armed homeowner is dead after he shot and killed an intruder Monday morning. When police arrived to the scene, they heard gunshots coming from inside the home. When they entered, they encountered someone who was armed. The person encountered was the homeowner.
“This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved,” Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said during a statement. “We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very difficult time.”
While it’s rare to have such an occurrence happen, it’s not impossible, as we can clearly see here. Since the armed homeowner had just shot an intruder, seemingly seconds before he was shot himself, we can imagine that tensions were running high and this armed homeowner was holding onto his firearm until he knew that the threat was completely eliminated.
Those extra seconds of keeping his firearm close cost him his life.
We are waiting to see how this story develops, as there are a few key bits of information that are not yet available.
- Did police announce themselves when they encountered the armed homeowner?
- Did the armed homeowner announce himself as the good guy?
- Where was the homeowner’s firearm pointed as police approached?
We will follow up on this story with another article once information becomes available.
It’s a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to the homeowner and his family, as well as the police officer(s) involved. It’s an officer’s worst nightmare to shoot someone who means no harm, and we can’t imagine what they are going through right now.
