When it comes to self-defense ammunition, there are many different types and brands to choose from. Some are legitimate while others are passed off as gimmicks or even novelty. We’re going to take a look at the Top 10 Most Popular Rounds for Self-Defense and Concealed Carry.

The 10 rounds listed are in no particular order.

Keep in mind that every line of self-defense ammunition is likely to cover numerous calibers. Each caliber has it’s own strengths and weaknesses with the different rounds, as well as by themselves. The best thing to do is to research your specific caliber that you are searching for to see which self-defense rounds would be best suited for your needs.

You can even head over to YouTube and check out all sorts of ballistics testing with every round we have listed below. For convenience, we start you off with a YouTube review/test for each round.

This list is to simply show you some of the more popular rounds that are available for self-defense. It sometimes takes a while to find the perfect round but once you do, you’ll likely use it consistently. Some firearms hate this round, some firearms hate that round. You’ll learn what is right for your setup during your own testing.

Interesting list… Yet, to be taken with a grain of salt. All the testing with the exception of one was done with the 9mm. (My EDC is .40 S&W) You’d have to read the individual articles to find out which weapons were used in the testing. An interesting FYI, indeed, and gives some clues where to start if one were looking for ideas. But, as the article stated, you need to do your own research with your own weapon to know what is right for you.

I’m quite interested in how this list was compiled. HST, Gold Dots, and the PDX1 are about the only real performers on there. Hydrashoks are OK, but HST replaced it for a reason..

Heads up, all calibers. HST will win the majority of tests.

I use Hornady Critical Defense or Critical Duty depending on if, I carry a sub compact or compact respective to the weapon I carry. They may not be the best ballistic round overall but they are easy to find and easy to chart out what works best and properly size to the the weapon, plus (so far) they have 100% consistent feed and tight POI.
