Suspect In Fatal Shooting And Hostage Situation Escapes From Hospital, Police On High Alert

ROSEVILLE, CALIFORNIA — Residents are anxious as 35-year-old Eric James Abril, suspected of a fatal shooting incident in Mahany Park on April 6, escaped custody from Sutter Roseville Hospital and is currently at large. Abril, described as a brown-haired, 6-foot man weighing around 175 pounds, was last recorded in security footage on Rainier Avenue and Saddletree Lane in Rocklin early Sunday morning.

Law enforcement’s search radius, as per the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, now encompasses Rocklin, Loomis, Whitney, Granite Bay, and Roseville, with resources deployed including Bearcats, police, and K-9 units. The green belts connecting the neighborhoods to Sutter Roseville present potential escape routes for Abril.

A hotline (916-409-1257) is operational for reporting any leads to assist in Abril’s recapture.

Abril was in the hospital for an undisclosed ailment since Thursday. Initially apprehended on April 6 following the shooting, he resisted arrest, taking two hostages. James MacEgan, one of the hostages and aged 72, was killed during the encounter. Patricia MacEgan, the second hostage, and a CHP officer sustained injuries but survived.
