Man Bit By Dog And Shot By Homeowner After Fleeing Crash Scene, Threatening Homeowners And Shattering A Door

EVANSVILLE, INDIANA – A man was shot by a homeowner after making threats and trying to break into the home.  According to Evansville Police, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Kimber Lane.

The female occupant of the home called 911 to report a stranger inside her fence, telling the dispatcher that he was yelling at her dog and attempting to break in through a sliding glass door. When she yelled at the man, he drew a gun and threatened to shoot her.

At that point, she retreated to the second floor of the home and summoned her fiancé for help. He went downstairs to find the suspect throwing objects at the glass door. The resident armed himself and yelled at the man several times, telling him to stop. The would-be intruder then grabbed a shovel and shattered the door, leading the resident to fire a single round at him.

Police located the suspect leaving the scene on foot and took him into custody, finding a loaded gun in his coat pocket. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and a dog bite, and upon his release was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail.

Authorities identified the suspect as Timothy Leavell and say that is facing charges of attempted burglary, possession of a handgun without a license and resisting law enforcement. They also believe that he may have fled the scene of a multi-vehicle crash that he was involved in just before the incident that triggered the 911 call and his wounds.
