NEW ORLEANS, LA — They say don’t judge a book by its cover, and no matter who “they” may be, they are absolutely right, as one elderly woman proved to a would-be robber in the dark of the night last Saturday.
Police reported that a 76-year-old woman stopped a burglar who had made his way into her home with the help of her little friend, the Equalizer.
As WWLTV reports:
Police say a 76-year-old woman shot and wounded a suspected burglar she found in her bedroom early Saturday morning.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. in the 1300 block of Esplanade Avenue.
According to the police’s Major Offense Log and overnight press notifications, the victim said she was awakened by a loud noise and found a man armed with ‘some type of object’ in her bedroom. She fired a weapon and struck the suspect once. He was taken to the hospital via EMS. There was no immediate word on his condition.
Of course, it wouldn’t have mattered in most places whether or the burglar was armed — once they’re in the home, their life is forfeit in a castle law state such as Louisiana.
But this is one of the beautiful things about being armed at home. It doesn’t matter who you are, or how vulnerable you might be when you’re in bed for the night.
To level the playing field, all one has to do is keep a cool head and keep a firearm nearby.
As long as you have time enough to discern your target and what’s behind it, you’ve got enough time to turn the tables on an assailant.
How much time that takes depends from person to person, but clearly this woman had enough time, and the attacker was in her room at the time.
That’s pretty quick.
