Man Fatally Shot By Homeowner During Attempted Home Invasion

PORT ORANGE, FLORIDA — A Port Orange homeowner fatally shot 46-year-old Justin Dematos, who allegedly attempted a break-in, on Nov. 16 around midnight. The incident occurred on Pelham Drive.

The residents were alerted by their dogs’ barking and noticed someone in their backyard. Dematos had initially rung the doorbell before removing a screen from a bedroom window on the house’s side. When confronted by the homeowner, Dematos did not respond and attempted to enter through the window, leading to the shooting.

Port Orange police confirmed that no other injuries were reported.
