4-Year-Old Grabs Gun From School Employee’s Backpack

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — A teacher’s aide from Bonham Prekindergarten School in San Marcos, Texas, was terminated after a student found a loaded gun in the aide’s backpack on October 12. The student removed the weapon and placed it on a classroom table. The teacher noticed, evacuated the room, and authorities were alerted.

The aide is now facing charges for carrying a weapon in a gun-free zone.

Samantha Vargas, the mother of the 4-year-old who found the gun, is contemplating withdrawing her child from the school. Vargas, whose son has nonverbal autism, expressed grave concerns about how long the child had the gun and the potential danger he and his classmates were in. She questioned the vigilance of the two classroom teachers.

The school district confirmed the aide’s departure but hasn’t disclosed their identity.
