Prosecutors Decline To Charge Man In TRAX Double Shooting In Utah

Published

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH — After reviewing all evidence, including video surveillance from multiple angles and witness statements, prosecutors in Salt Lake City have declined to file charges against a man who shot two other men on a TRAX train platform in early July.

The 900 South 200 West TRAX platform was the scene of the double shooting on July 2nd, 2022.  Just after 10:00 PM, Utah Transit Authority Police received a 911 call from a man who stated that he had just shot two people on the platform.  Upon their arrival, officers found Garrison Willie (36) dead of a gunshot wound and a second man in critical condition.  The man in critical condition has survived and may be facing charges in the incident.

According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, the evidence is clear.  The video showed that both men repeatedly approached the man who shot them, and he repeatedly told them to leave him alone.  At one point, the man presented his firearm, and the men both continued to approach and actually increased the speed of their approach.

The prosecutor’s office said that this fact meant that it was not unreasonable for the man to feel that his life was in danger.

The man backed up 30-40 feet and fired a warning shot, but both men continued to approach him.  The man then defended himself, shooting both men.

In 2020, a woman was stabbed 16 times by a man she didn’t know on that same TRAX platform.
