LA GRANGE, KY — An unidentified nanny was at a home with a 3-year-old when a man posing as a delivery man came to the door. The nanny didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, and mentioned that it wasn’t uncommon for this house to get regular deliveries.
When there was a knock at the door Thursday morning, March 26, she said the man, who held a clipboard and package, and was dressed in a brown jacket, cargo shorts and tennis shoes immediately put her at ease with his words.
“He said, ‘I have a package to deliver for,’ and he mentioned the homeowner’s name and I said, ‘OK,’ because it didn’t seem out of the ordinary.”
She said the man pretended to not have a pen and asked the nanny to grab one for him. When she came around the corner with a pen, she said, the man was pointing a gun to her head.
She says that her first instinct was to try and wrestle the gun away from the man, which she did indeed try to do. During the scuffle, she says that she grew increasingly worried that the gun would go off. Because of this, she gave in and ended up having her hands zip-tied together.
The gunman put them in the bathroom while he went back through the house. The nanny could hear other people in the home, but was unable to tell just how many there were.
Long story short, her and the 3-year-old she was watching made it out alive and after the bad guys left, she called 911 to report the incident.
These types of stories are not that uncommon, as many criminals will pose as ordinary delivery drivers looking to simply hand off a package. We had a story not too long ago about a very similar thing, but it didn’t end well for the criminals since one of the residents inside the home was armed.
So, based on this incident, what could the nanny have done to possibly avoid the man from entering? Well for starters, as soon as he requested a pen, she should have closed and locked the door, and then went to get the pen. Second, she could have left the door unanswered. However, many criminals will ring the door bell as a way to see if anyone is home. If they feel the home is vacant, they may find this to be their moment to enter. In a situation like that, you’ll likely want something to fight back with.
That ‘something’ should be, oh I don’t know… a firearm?
