CALUMET CITY, IL (2-minute read) — In the early hours of October 6, 2024, police responded to a retail theft at a Walgreens located in the 500 block of Torrence Avenue in Calumet City. Officers tracked down the vehicle in the 1600 block of Sibley, where they found a 42-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Police administered first aid before transporting him to a local trauma center, where he later died from his injuries.
According to the preliminary investigation, the man and a 48-year-old woman exited Walgreens without paying for merchandise. The woman fled on foot after employees recovered the stolen items from her. When the 42-year-old man was confronted, he drew a handgun. A store employee, who holds a valid concealed carry license, responded by firing his firearm, hitting the man. The wounded suspect then drove away from the scene but was later located by police.
