LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK — On Tuesday in North Bellmore, Long Island, Kiber Calderon, 31, was seen waving a gun at people. Police received multiple 911 calls about Calderon firing the gun into the air. In an attempt to neutralize the situation, an officer struck Calderon with a police vehicle, preventing potential harm to bystanders. Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder praised the officer’s decision, stating that officers are trained to use appropriate force. Calderon, who had minor injuries, was arrested and is currently undergoing a mental health assessment. An officer is on sick leave due to trauma from the incident.
County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman commended the officer for the tactical decision. Calderon faces multiple charges, including weapon and drug possession, menacing, and reckless endangerment, though details about the drug charge weren’t disclosed. Calderon’s history includes two recent arrests for burglary in New York City. Living in Brooklyn, Calderon has been charged previously with burglary and trespassing and has pleaded not guilty.
