Man Shoots Best Friend In Apparent Self-Defense Situation

DEKALB, TX — After what appears to be a self-defense shooting at a home in Texas, a man’s best friend is dead and the man who killed him is not likely to face charges.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that resident Nicholas Paul was forced to shoot and kill his best friend and roommate, Rodney Clay Peters, after he reportedly invaded Paul’s bedroom and pointed a rifle at him.

As the Texarkana Gazette reports:

Bowie County deputies were dispatched to a shooting in the 900 block of County Road 4106 about 11:54 p.m. Sunday, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Neal.

When they arrived they spoke with Nicholas Paul while Life Net personnel provided medical attention to a gunshot victim.

Paul told deputies that Rodney Clay Peters was his best friend and roommate.

Apparently, Peters had been acting “crazy” and was carrying his rifle around with him, according to Neal’s press release.”

And even after all that — the guy still tries to save him.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that Paul attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on his friend until help arrived. Peters still did not survive.

Chief Deputy Jeff Neal seems convinced of Paul’s innocence.

“Mr. Peters then went to Mr. Paul’s bedroom and pointed the rifle at him,” he reportedly said. “Mr. Paul grabbed a handgun that was next to his bed and fired at the victim to protect his life. Mr. Peters fell to the ground and Mr. Paul called 911.”

What an awful situation. Still, Paul pretty clearly did everything he could not only to ensure his survival, but also to try to help his troubled friend.
