Woman Accidentally Kills Herself With Gun Purchased For Defense Against Ferguson Riots

Friday night in downtown St. Louis, a woman died from a negligent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. It was a gun she bought to protect herself.

The woman has been identified as 26-year-old Becca Campbell. It was reported that she had been driving with her 33-year-old boyfriend, who has not been identified. He told police that the couple had bought the gun for self-protection during the unrest due to the grand jury decision in the Michael Brown shooting case.

As the two were driving late Friday night, the Campbell joking waved the gun around in the car saying that she was ready for Ferguson. The boyfriend ducked to get out of the way of the gun, and accidentally rear-ended a car in front of them. Striking the car in front of them apparently caused Campbell to pull the trigger, shooting herself in the head.

Campbell was rushed to a hospital, but did not survive. In order to guarantee accuracy of the story, police are continuing their investigation. Police are currently waiting for gun trace results.

While the need for residents to protect themselves in the St. Louis area is very high right now, this does not mean that proper firearm safety is to be ignored. It’s a sad incident that could have been entirely avoided, and it highlights the importance of firearm safety at every step of firearm ownership.
