UPDATE @ 5:57PM: During a press conference, the following information was released:
- Shortly after 1pm, shots were reported fired on campus
- 1 faculty member was killed in the shooting
- No other fatalities or injuries occurred
- The suspect was taken into custody at 2:31pm
- The firearm used in the shooting has not yet been located
- A motive for the shooting is not yet known
- Classes have been cancelled for the rest of today and tomorrow
UPDATE @ 3:49PM: The suspect has been taken into custody, as reported by local media. Lockdowns have also been lifted for the schools.
There is still no information on possible victims.

CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA — Authorities issued an alert regarding an armed individual near UNC-Chapel Hill on Monday afternoon. A photo of the suspect, believed to be a student named Tailei Qi, was released.

People on campus were advised to remain indoors and stay away from windows. Law enforcement and emergency services responded in large numbers, concentrating around the Genome Sciences Building. By 2:15 p.m., multiple agencies had joined the response.
Chapel Hill Transit suspended bus services, and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools implemented a “Secure Mode”, locking all doors and restricting movement in and out of their facilities until further notice.
Additionally, the NC State Highway Patrol deployed a helicopter to assist in locating the suspect.
