NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — A tragic string of knife attacks on the New York City subway system this past weekend resulted in one death and injuries to four others, according to police reports. A series of three assaults targeted female passengers within an hour’s time, causing significant concern.
Authorities released footage on Monday of a male suspect in these attacks, captured at the East 86th Street station near Lexington Avenue. The individual in question assaulted two women, ages 48 and 19, from behind, inflicting leg injuries with a sharp implement around 4 p.m.
One of the victims, a teenager, recounted the horrifying incident. She had felt a sudden slicing pain and turned to see the assailant behind her. At that moment, she saw blood dripping from her leg. This took place as she was on her way downtown to buy a Father’s Day cake for her dad.
“I noticed [the suspect] come in, he was kind of staring at me, I wasn’t trying to make eye contact with him. It was me, him and a lady that got off with a service dog,” said the teen. “I got off first and then he was behind me. I was walking up the stairs and he slashed me…I looked back and he was just there, standing, and I was crying and he just walked across the platform.”
Police report that the same man is believed to have struck a 28-year-old woman at the Chambers Street station in lower Manhattan approximately 20 minutes later. The assailant fled and has yet to be identified.
The victim was immediately taken to a nearby hospital with a severe cut on her left leg. The three female victims are anticipated to recover fully.
Additionally, on the morning of Father’s Day weekend, an unrelated fatal stabbing took place on a 4 train at Union Square. The deceased was identified as Tavon Silver, 32, discovered unconscious in a train car with a chest wound.
There have been no arrests thus far and investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement expressing concerns over potential future attacks. Increased police patrols have been implemented on the 4/5/6 line as a precautionary measure. The public has been urged to report any relevant information about the suspect, who is considered dangerous and likely still armed.
