Walmart Turning Into Dick’s; Sales Of All Handgun Ammunition Ending, Also Telling Customers That Open-Carry Is A No-Go

The largest retail store chain, Walmart, is pulling the plug on handgun ammunition, as well as certain rifle calibers. The decision was announced Tuesday, along with the company’s address to it’s customers that they no longer want to see citizens openly carrying firearms at their locations.

Following in the footsteps of Dick’s Sporting Goods, who stopped selling all firearms and ammunition, Walmart is poised to likely one day remove themselves from the firearms industry completely.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based discounter said Tuesday it will stop selling handgun ammunition as well as short-barrel rifle ammunition, such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber used in military style weapons, after it runs out of its current inventory.

The approach, according to a memo circulated internally, is Walmart’s attempt at what they feel would make a difference in the future.

“In a complex situation lacking a simple solution, we are trying to take constructive steps to reduce the risk that events like these will happen again. The status quo is unacceptable.”

Along with the discontinued sales of certain ammo, they also ask that customers no longer openly carry firearms inside their Walmart and Sam’s Club locations. They do, however, still maintain the same policy of allowing permitted concealed carry.

The policy changes come shortly after a string of mass shootings, one of which took place at a Walmart location in Texas.
