Homeowner Gets Shot In Leg During Home Invasion — Shoots Back And Sends Suspects Fleeing

NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA — When a 54-year-old homeowner awoke to the sounds of intruders, he probably didn’t expect them to immediately open fire. Unfortunately, after a short confrontation with the intruders, that’s precisely what happened. He was hit in the leg but thankfully had his own firearm to return fire. The suspects fled the scene.

According to WTKR News 3, this area of Newport News isn’t known for violent break-ins. Neighbors appeared frightened and worried because the neighborhood is mostly populated with families and families with children.

“It is kind of scary,” said a neighbor along Moyer Road. “I have an 11-year-old here, so it’s just one of those things where you don’t hear stuff like that.”

One neighbor also commented that it’s necessary to own a gun to protect yourself. She said that both her and her husband are prepared should a similar incident occur to them.

It’s certainly not something that anyone truly looks forward to, but it’s an increasingly reality honest, hard working people are faced with. The potential for a violent home invasion raises everyone’s awareness. It brings focus back on the fact that violent crime can happen any time, anywhere, for any reason. That’s why we’re armed — our lives and our families are worth it.

Thankfully, this homeowner was able to defend himself. He did get shot but he was still able to repel his attackers. That’s impressive considering they seemed to have little hesitation to use deadly force against him.

When it comes down to it, if someone wants something you have, it’s not unthinkable that he’s willing to use force to get it. The only remaining question is: what will you do to stop it?

It’s not good enough to say, “oh, I live in a good part of town” or “my neighbors have my back.” Those are great things, don’t get us wrong, but it’s not good enough.

Being prepared with a firearm and the knowledge to use it properly can protect you, your family, and your household should the unfortunate occur.

Staying armed, staying ready isn’t just a lifestyle choice — it’s become a way of life unto itself. Let’s take a moment and review our plan for ensuring bad guys can’t just walk in the front door and hurt who they want.

We’ve written several articles going into the details of how to plan for a home invasion. You might find some of the stuff we’ve written about the topic useful but the ultimate hope is that it gets your brain moving as to what you intend to do. Having a plan is a good start. Practicing that plan is even more essential.

Be prepared. Your life is worth it.
