For many states, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to obtain a gun permit. Thankfully, it doesn’t normally take as long as it did for this guy. After three long years, a New Jersey man has finally received his gun permit.
Michael McGovern of Jersey City applied for his permit back in 2011, but the city initially denied his application because McGovern reportedly refused to fill out special forms that the city includes with the application. He was also supposedly arrested for misdemeanor offenses in Florida about ten years prior, however McGovern said he was not convicted of the offenses.
A year later, in October 2012, it was ruled in trial in Jersey City’s favor. And then In April 2014, that decision was reversed by an appellate court due to Jersey City veering outside of its authority by demanding “substantially more” information on its gun-permit application than state law allows.
Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop later appealed the ruling, but Evan Nappen, McGovern’s attorney, said the city never filed one. Nappen stated that the deadline to appeal the ruling was “months and months” ago.
When asked why the city didn’t appeal, Jennifer Morrill, a spokeswoman for the city said the city is “considering how best to proceed.”
It was a lengthy process for McGovern, but he was patient and finally obtained his gun permit. McGovern told Eugene Volokh of The Washington Post,
“I’m off to the range to break in my HK45c.”
