Florida Woman Shoots At Venomous Snake, Ends Up In Jail

It’s a known issue about the number of snakes in Florida. Well, a Panama City woman decided to take on the problem herself. Thirty-year-old April Dawn DeMarco was arrested for firing a .380-caliber handgun on a football field at an area high school. She responded after a group of parents found a water moccasin on the field during a Pop Warner football practice. She reportedly borrowed the pistol from thirty-one-year-old Miren Gregory.

For those who do not know, water moccasins are large venomous snakes whose bite is painful — and can be deadly. Children were escorted away from the area after finding the snake on the field. Some of the team’s coaches tried to kill the snake by hitting it with sticks. When they were unsuccessful, Gregory informed DeMarco she had a concealed carry permit and a handgun.

The women were told that having a firearms on school grounds was illegal, but DeMarco said that she would take the blame in order to protect the kids. It was reported that the group of children were about 20 to 50 yards away when DeMarco fired the handgun, but unfortunately she missed the snake.

Discharging a firearm on school property is a felony and she was arrested for discharging a firearm on school property and possession of a firearm on school property. A day later, Gregory, the owner of the handgun, was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm on school property. DeMarco was not available for any comments.

What are your thoughts on the actions of DeMarco?
