DC Police Chief Says Cab Drivers Should Not Carry Concealed Guns

Along with everything else that the District of Columbia is trying to change, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier says that taxi drivers should be banned from carrying concealed handguns.

This statement was made during a hearing for the bill that would require residents of DC as well as visitors to get concealed handgun permits for the first time in almost 40 years. As we mentioned in a recent article, those individuals who are caught carrying a firearm without a permit will be prosecuted.

She is encouraging that the bill also has restrictions on carrying guns near dignitaries or at any high-profile events. It was not specified exactly what type of restrictions she is referring to. Additionally, she says carrying a weapon should be restricted in areas “where carrying a weapon would be prohibited to the grounds and parking lots surrounding government buildings.”

The bill already has a lot of support from the District’s political leaders, and Democratic Mayor Vincent Gray has already signed a temporary version. It’s too bad that there are so many civilians against this bill, and not to mention the cab drivers who will no longer be able to protect themselves.

Gun-rights advocates say the bill doesn’t abide by the Second Amendment. This is mainly because it requires people to clearly show why they need to carry a gun for self-defense. And if their reasoning isn’t deemed sufficient, you’ll be denied.

Long story short, getting a concealed carry permit in DC is going to be extremely difficult.
